Plug-in hybrids – environmentally friendly and economical

Plug-in hybrid vehicles combine the best characteristics of two drive technologies – an electric engine with a battery and a combustion engine.

What you need to know

The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) comes equipped with a combustion engine combined with an e-drive. Unlike full hybrids, plug-in hybrids can be fully charged via a power source. This means that you can drive the vehicle powered completely by electricity and without releasing any emissions on most day-to-day journeys. The combustion engine kicks in when the battery is empty or you need to drive long distances. In this respect, plug-in hybrids bring together the best of both worlds. What’s more, both engines can be used in parallel to deliver a high-performance driving experience.

What is the range of plug-in hybrids?

According to test reports, the realistic range of plug-in hybrids is between 30 and 100 km. Plug-in hybrids are therefore a particularly attractive means of transport for the daily commute, as most journeys to work are less than 50 km. Depending on your driving style or the season, the electric range can vary, however. In winter, for example, the range is reduced due to the use of the heating system.

When is it expedient to drive a plug-in hybrid?

A plug-in hybrid is ideal if you want to use your car in many different ways. The electric engine is best suited for use on shorter journeys, for example the daily commute to work. Should you need to make longer journeys, you can then make use of the greater range and flexibility of the combustion engine.

How do you charge a plug-in hybrid?

As with all hybrid vehicles, energy is recovered during the braking process and this is used to charge the battery. Plug-in hybrids can also be recharged at charging stations, as well as via wall boxes and power sockets, and can also be refuelled everywhere.

Are there any funding initiatives for plug-in hybrids?

Yes and no. Unlike for fully electric cars, there are currently no national funding initiatives (e.g. the reduction of motor vehicle tax) for plug-in hybrids. However, some cantons and municipalities do provide support by subsidising the purchase of a PHEV. It is definitely worthwhile asking your municipality about this.
