Learn to drive sustainably: why Bek’s driving school relies on the VW ID.3

Electrifying driving training on the Vaud Riviera: The renowned Bek’s driving school has converted its entire fleet to electric vehicles, setting a strong example of sustainability and modern learning.

Haziz Bexheti and Bekim Batusha, the founders of Bek’s Driving School, share their experiences with the ID.3 and explain why this step is beneficial not only for the environment, but also for the quality of driving training and business success.

Why did Bek’s driving school choose the ID.3?

The ID.3 was a natural choice: it is an excellent compromise between range, cost per kilometre and driving comfort. Its small size, very short turning radius (significantly better than our old Audi Q3) and intuitive handling make it perfect for learning.

What makes the ID.3 different?

It stands out for its modern design, spacious interior and outstanding manoeuvrability. Many of our learners are amazed at how easy it is to use and how quiet it is, making them much more relaxed behind the wheel. The driving position is comfortable, and the driving aids are well integrated without being intrusive.

Benefits and popular features

Its tight turning radius is a major asset for manoeuvring. Regenerative braking is also very useful and adds a new dimension to learning anticipatory driving. Not to mention the infotainment and driver assistance systems, which are both modern and intuitive.

Consumption

The average consumption is between 16 and 19 kWh/100 km, depending on outdoor conditions. For a typical driving school day, it is very economical. Compared to an ICE vehicle, the costs are clearly lower, except for fast charging, where the cost is nearing that of a full tank of petrol.

Maintenance

A real change: in two years of use, we’ve only performed one service, compared to three per year for an ICE vehicle (costing around CHF 400 per service). To date, there have been no brake pad changes, despite 190,000 km on the clock – thanks to regenerative braking! Breakdowns are almost non-existent, and routine maintenance is very limited.

Braking

The braking is very efficient, smooth and consistent. Thanks to regenerative braking, there is almost no brake pad wear whatsoever. This was a great surprise for us, and a real long-term benefit.

Driver feedback

Our learners and instructors feel a real sense of calm in the interior. The quietness and smoothness of the ride create a zen-like atmosphere, providing the ideal conditions for learning. Many of our learners, even those not interested in the cars at the start, become very curious about electric and ask a lot of questions.

Challenges encountered

The main challenge remains charging for employees who cannot charge at home. Sometimes you have to get creative in order to find a charge point close to your home, especially at night. This is something we need to anticipate. There is also some apprehension among some learner drivers at the beginning, but it quickly disappears once they get behind the wheel.

Overall impact

The ID.3 has enabled us to reduce our fixed costs, without having to increase our prices, while maintaining a high level of teaching quality. It has even made us change the way we drive – smoother, more anticipatory – and this is also reflected in our learners.
